One of the most helpful tools available is the Free Defensible Space Home Assessment offered by the Angel Fire Fire Department.

This no-cost service sends a trained fire ambassador to walk your property and identify wildfire risks, like overgrown brush, tree limbs too close to the house, or woodpiles in the wrong spot. You’ll receive a clear report and simple recommendations to help you reduce fire danger and make your home more insurable.

Insurance Tips from a Pro

Securing homeowners insurance in Northern New Mexico can be a little more complex than in other areas, but it’s very doable when you know what to look for. State Farm agent Cary Bohn shares a few key factors that impact coverage:

“Premiums are often lower here than in other states, but qualifying is the challenge. That’s why things like defensible space, access for fire crews, and water availability really matter.”

Here’s what insurers often look for:

• Multiple access points for fire department response

• Cleared space and pruned trees around the home

• Outdoor fire pits placed at least 10 feet from structures

• Nearby fire hydrants and sufficient water pressure

• Replacement cost of the home

Bottom line: the more prepared your property is, the easier it is to insure.

What If You Can't Get Traditional Insurance?

New Mexico also offers the FAIR Plan, a basic insurance program for homes that don’t qualify through private companies. Coverage limits were recently increased to help more property owners up to $750,000 in some areas, and while this isn’t ideal for everyone, it’s an important backup option.
