Firewise and Insurable: How Angel Fire Homeowners and Buyers Can Stay Protected

Firewise sign in Angel Fire, NM urging homeowners to create defensible space for wildfire protection and home insurance eligibility.

In a mountain town like Angel Fire, wildfire awareness comes with the territory. But here’s the good news: our village isn’t just crossing fingers and hoping for the best; we’re acting. With free resources, smart programs, and community-wide investments, Angel Fire is helping both current homeowners and future buyers stay safe, covered, and confident.

Start with a Free Defensible Space Home Assessment

One of the most helpful tools available is the Free Defensible Space Home Assessment offered by the Angel Fire Fire Department.

This no-cost service sends a trained fire ambassador to walk your property and identify wildfire risks, like overgrown brush, tree limbs too close to the house, or woodpiles in the wrong spot. You’ll receive a clear report and simple recommendations to help you reduce fire danger and make your home more insurable.

Even better?
✔ Properties that meet the recommended standards are eligible for up to 50% off the Village’s wildland fire fee
✔ It shows insurance providers you’re proactive about risk management

Insurance Tips from a Pro

Securing homeowners insurance in Northern New Mexico can be a little more complex than in other areas, but it’s very doable when you know what to look for. State Farm agent Cary Bohn shares a few key factors that impact coverage:

“Premiums are often lower here than in other states, but qualifying is the challenge. That’s why things like defensible space, access for fire crews, and water availability really matter.”

Here’s what insurers often look for:

  • Multiple access points for fire department response

  • Cleared space and pruned trees around the home

  • Outdoor fire pits placed at least 10 feet from structures

  • Nearby fire hydrants and sufficient water pressure

  • Replacement cost of the home

Bottom line: the more prepared your property is, the easier it is to insure.

What If You Can't Get Traditional Insurance?

New Mexico also offers the FAIR Plan, a basic insurance program for homes that don’t qualify through private companies. Coverage limits were recently increased to help more property owners up to $750,000 in some areas, and while this isn’t ideal for everyone, it’s an important backup option.

Ask your Realtor or a NM FAIR Plan–certified agent if this might apply to your situation.

Community-Wide Fire Protection Efforts

Angel Fire isn’t leaving the heavy lifting to homeowners. The Village and Fire Department are actively working to improve fire safety and support our insurability at the community level. Recent efforts include:

  • Slash removal and chipping services to help homeowners clear vegetation

  • Prescribed burns and forest thinning in surrounding high-risk areas

  • New gear and upgraded equipment for faster, safer fire response

  • Ongoing Firewise workshops and education programs

  • A Defensible Space Ordinance that strengthens standards and reduces community risk

  • Investments to improve the fire department’s ISO rating, which can lower premiums across the board

This isn’t just about prevention, it’s about progress. And when our town comes together, everyone benefits.
